Japanese Matcha Bowl - 澤田秀一 Sawada Shuichi of Shusen Toen - Green Celadon Mino-yaki Chawan - 350ml

Japanese Matcha Bowl - 澤田秀一 Sawada Shuichi of Shusen Toen - Green Celadon Mino-yaki Chawan - 350ml

This Mino-yaki tenmoku-gata chawan (matcha bowl) is made in the classic conical tenmoku shape and is glazed in a stunning snowflake celadon.

Unlike other crazed celadon glazes which only have one layer of cracks, snowflake celadon glazes (called 'hyōretsukannyū' (氷裂貫入) or 'ice-crack' in Japanese), require a thick application of the glaze, allowing the cracks to form layers, resulting in this striking effect.

This chawan was made by Sawada Shuichi (澤田秀一) of Shusen Toen (秀泉陶苑 Stamped 秀泉).

Mino-yaki (美濃焼,) is a type of Japanese pottery produced in Mino Province in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Since the introduction of mass production in the Meiji period (1868–1912), Mino ware accounts for around 50% of Japanese pottery produced today.

Dimensions:

13cm (5.1in) - width
6.9cm (2.7in) - height
